When this work is needed
Complete this setup before demolition, cutting, grinding, painting, adhesive use, or any overlap between trades that creates dust, fumes, or fire risk. A short project still needs a fire extinguisher, ventilation, and a clear waste location when it uses power tools or flammable materials in a restricted route.

What to check on site
A photograph of safety equipment does not prove that the site can respond to an incident. Check where it is placed, whether it works, and whether a new worker can still find the escape and reporting route when the work changes.

Check the pressure and expiry of the fire extinguisher and place it visibly near the exit. The first-aid kit must open immediately, and suitable masks, eye protection, and gloves should be available for the actual number of workers doing demolition, cutting, or painting. - Set ventilation and waste routes

Direct dust and fumes away from shared and occupied areas, combining extraction with the temporary partition where necessary. Store waste and materials only where they do not obstruct the door, distribution board, extinguisher, or escape path. - Share safety rules with workers

Before work starts, brief the team on protective equipment and the stop-and-report order for fire, leaks, and injuries. Check that the site manager and emergency contacts are posted and that anyone entering for the first time has received the same briefing.
Where problems usually start

- Unusable fire extinguisher If its pressure and position have not been checked, the team may be unable to find or operate it during the first moments of a fire.
- Dust and fumes without ventilation Without a defined exhaust direction and protective equipment, dust and volatile compounds can remain concentrated indoors.
- Waste blocking the entrance Bags and materials in the route increase fall risk and delay evacuation.
Do not stop at placing equipment on site. Ask the workers to identify it, explain how it is used, and repeat who they contact when work has to stop.
If dust or odour spreads into shared or occupied areas, pause the work. Reset the exhaust direction, temporary barrier, and protective-equipment level before restarting.
Timing and records
Allow roughly one to two hours for preparation, but a larger site or higher-risk work may need more equipment and route planning. Inspect again before and after each working day rather than relying on the initial setup.
Record the fire-extinguisher condition and location, contents of the first-aid kit, ventilation and waste routes, briefing notes, and any safety issue that occurred. Use the record to brief the next day's team on risks that have changed.
Safety preparation follows the protected route and must remain compatible with temporary power, water, and the marking work that follows. Reviewing them together keeps emergency access visible as the site changes.
