What this work covers
Masonry uses brick and mortar to form bathroom ledges, waterproofing curbs, partition walls, and bath aprons. These small structures set the line for waterproofing, plaster, and tile, so their position, plumb, filled joints, and connection to the existing structure matter far beyond the brickwork itself.

When this work is needed
It is used where a solid ledge, curb, bath side, or partition is required before wet-area finishes. Confirm supply and waste pipes, taps, drains, door openings, and final tile thickness first; moving them after the mortar has cured means demolition and repeat work.
Decide before the first course
Set the finished dimensions from the services and the next finish, not from the bare brick alone.
- Exact length, height, and thickness of each ledge, curb, apron, and partition
- Positions of pipes, taps, drains, doors, sanitaryware, and fitted furniture
- Required reinforcement and anchors tying taller partitions to the structure
- Joint filling and the treatment of chases, penetrations, and waterproofing curbs
- Allowance for plaster, waterproofing, adhesive, and final tile thickness
Check in the quote
Ask for each masonry element to be measured and described separately.
- Are the location, dimensions, brick type, and quantity stated for every element?
- Are base cleaning, dampening, setting-out, and reference lines included?
- Are anchors, reinforcement, and ties for partitions included where required?
- Are complete mortar joints and close-up repairs to waterproofing curbs included?
- Are plumb, level, curing, and pre-waterproofing inspections included?

What to check on site
Brickwork becomes the geometry of the next trades. Set it from the final finish lines, keep it tied to the structure, and do not hide open joints beneath waterproofing.
- Material Delivery and Base Prep Complete

Bring in the specified brick and mortar, clean and dampen the base, and mark level and plumb lines. Recheck pipes, taps, drains, doors, and the thickness of waterproofing and tile against the proposed brick line. - Masonry Installation Complete

Lay the courses with staggered joints and fully packed mortar. Tie taller partitions into the existing structure with the specified anchors, and form ledges and waterproofing curbs to the agreed height without blocking services. - Plumb, Joints, and Curing Check Complete

Check plumb and level while the mortar can still be corrected, then inspect every curb joint for pinholes. Protect the work from rapid drying, keep it unloaded during curing, and hand over the confirmed dimensions to waterproofing and plastering.
Where problems usually start

- Brickwork out of plumb A deviation greater than the reference tolerance pushes plaster and tile lines out as well, building up visible steps.
- Tall partition without anchors A wall not tied to the existing structure can become unstable under impact or service loads.
- Pinholes in a waterproofing curb Incomplete mortar joints can create a water path beneath the later waterproofing layer.
- Mortar dried too quickly Direct sun or strong air movement can pull out moisture before curing, reducing bond and causing cracks.
Do not accept a crooked masonry face on the promise that tile adhesive will correct it. Verify the reference line, joints, reinforcement, and service clearances before curing is complete.
Keep the setting-out dimensions, service positions, anchor and joint photographs, curb close-ups, plumb and level results, and curing dates.
Timing and records
Allow about 8 to 16 hours of site work. Element count, reinforcement, service coordination, and access can change this, and at least 24 hours of curing may be needed before the next load or finish.
Record each element's dimensions, brick and mortar, anchor positions, service clearances, filled joints, curb condition, plumb and level checks, and curing protection.
Masonry begins from the plumbing layout and becomes the base for waterproofing, plaster, and tile, so those transitions should be checked together.
