Bathroom wall tiling begins after the waterproofing and wall substrate are ready. Tiles from the supplied batches are checked and laid out against level and plumb reference lines, with deliberate cuts around fittings and frames. Bonding, alignment, and hollow spots are inspected before grout hides the joints.
When this work is needed
A fully stripped bathroom or widespread cracking and hollow wall tiles usually requires the substrate and waterproofing to be checked before a new tiled finish is installed. If only a few tiles or grout joints are damaged, full removal may be unnecessary. First establish whether the tiles move, how far the hollow area extends, and whether a local repair would disturb the waterproof layer.
Decide before work starts
Tile colour and pattern are only the visible decisions. Agree on these installation details as well.
Tile size, batch, pattern direction, and required quantity
The position of the first full tile, grout reference lines, and small cuts
How cuts and holes around taps, pipes, windows, ledges, and corners will be finished
The adhesive and bedding method suited to the tile size and substrate
Acceptance checks for alignment, lippage, penetrations, and hollow spots before grouting
Check in the quote
Use these questions when you review the quote.
How much protection of the waterproofing and repair of the wall substrate is included?
Does the quote specify tile size, quantity, wastage, and batch checking?
Are cuts and holes around windows, taps, pipes, and corners included?
Are the adhesive, bedding method, and grout-joint width specified?
If tapping finds hollow areas, are repairs and reinspection included?
What to check on site
A good wall finish depends on both visible alignment and hidden adhesive coverage. Approve the substrate and layout first, then check that the tiles are being fully bedded as the work proceeds.
01Material Check and Substrate Prep Complete
Open tiles from several boxes and compare colour, pattern, warping, and damage before installation. Remove dust and high spots from the wall, check plumb and flatness without damaging the waterproofing, and apply the specified primer evenly where it is required.
02Reference Lines and Layout Complete
Set the first level and plumb lines with a laser, then dry-plan where full and cut tiles will fall at the floor, ceiling, and corners. Check that holes for taps and services do not land on a fragile tile edge and that grout lines continue cleanly between adjoining walls.
03Tile Bonding Complete
Spread the adhesive so there are no large voids between the substrate and the back of the tile, then press each tile firmly into position. Remove an occasional tile during installation to check coverage, and use spacers to maintain joint width and control lippage.
Where problems usually start
Hollow or loose wall tilesIncomplete adhesive coverage can leave hollow areas that eventually loosen or detach under their own weight.
Joint width and waterproofing edgeA drifting layout can produce uneven grout lines and leave the waterproofing termination visible at the finish edge.
Level and plumb linesIf the first row is not fixed to a reliable reference, the joints can run diagonally across the whole wall.
Cuts around fittings and cornersPoorly planned cuts can leave narrow pieces and weakly bonded edges beside taps, frames, and corners.
A hollow sound alone does not mean every tile must be removed. Map the affected area and check for movement, cracks, and weak cut pieces before deciding the repair scope.
If a tile moves or cracks and the waterproofing may be damaged, pause grouting and fixture installation. The tile and waterproofing contractors should agree on what to expose and how to repair it.
Timing and records
Allow roughly 16 to 24 hours for active tiling, but substrate repair, drying, curing after bonding, and repairs are additional. Allow at least 48 hours before grouting unless the adhesive specification and site temperature or humidity require longer.
Record the tile product and batch, the dry layout, first-tile position and reference lines, holes around taps and pipes, window and corner cuts, and every area identified by the tapping inspection. Once grout and fixtures are installed, the adhesive coverage is much harder to verify.
If you have bathroom wall photos, a tile layout, or the quote, I can help you check the substrate, layout, and bonding inspection scope.
Bathroom wall tile is installed over the approved waterproofing and must cure before grouting. Looking at the adjoining stages helps keep hidden waterproofing and visible joint lines under the same inspection plan.
