What this work covers
Floor insulation treats the cold edges of an expanded balcony, an exterior wall, or a floor over an exposed space. Boards are fitted tightly to the base and the joints, window line, and pipe penetrations are sealed so cold air and condensation do not travel under the finished floor.

When this work is needed
Consider it where the floor stays noticeably cold in winter, especially at an expanded balcony, a first-floor home, or above a piloti. Before covering the area, separate a real insulation gap from water leakage or a damp screed; adding more board over a wet base will not solve the cause.
Decide before setting the floor height
Fix the insulation boundary and finished level together.
- Exact areas to reinforce at the expansion, exterior-wall edge, and below windows
- Board type and thickness, plus the fixing method for the existing base
- How board joints and wall-to-floor edges will be taped and sealed
- Foam or shaped infill around pipe penetrations and masonry ledges
- Clearance at doors, baseboards, and adjacent finished floors

A material name is not enough; the quote should show where every edge treatment belongs.
- Are insulation area, product, and thickness listed room by room?
- Are drying, loose-base repair, and adhesive-residue removal included?

What to check on site
The useful layer is the one that stays continuous around every cold edge without trapping moisture or raising the floor into a door.

Check the base for moisture, loose mortar, and residual adhesive. Mark the expansion line, lower window frame, exterior-wall edge, and penetrations where cold air is felt, then calculate the combined insulation, screed, and finish height before anything is fixed. - Insulation Attachment and Reinforcement Complete

Fit the insulation tightly without rocking or hollow pockets. Cut narrow pieces to the real shape around ledges and pipes, secure them rather than wedging them loosely, and keep board joints close enough to seal as one surface. - Joint and Gap Sealing Check Complete

Tape every board joint and seal the wall, window, and pipe edges with the specified material. Press the surface by hand, check again for air movement, and photograph the concealed perimeter before the screed covers it.
Where problems usually start

- Untaped board joint A joint that lifts can move under the finish and later produce a squeak when the floor is walked on.
- Cold-air path left open Gaps below a window, along the wall, or around a pipe can keep feeding cold air beneath an otherwise insulated floor.
- Loose board in the expanded area A hollow pocket leaves a cold surface where moisture can condense and the finish can lift.
Do not respond to a cold floor by stacking insulation blindly. Find the moisture source, air path, and break in the insulation line first.
Before screeding, retain the product and thickness, covered area, base-moisture result, joint and perimeter photographs, lifting check, and finished-height reference.
Timing and records
Allow about 4 to 8 hours on site. Drying, base repairs, the size of the expanded area, and detailed gap sealing can add separate time.
Keep a room-by-room record of product, thickness, area, base condition, joint and penetration sealing, lifting checks, and the agreed finished-floor height.
