What to check on site
Doors and cabinets may look like joinery alone, but fitted units often conceal plumbing, wiring, and heavy fixings. Disconnect services and preserved parts before working outward to the surrounding finish.
- Check connections and preserved edges

Label and store reusable locks, hinges, and other hardware. Isolate and disconnect water, waste, power, and hood wiring inside the units, then protect retained tile and walls along the removal boundary. - Remove doors and frames

Take off the door leaf first to reduce weight, remove the hardware, and dismantle trims and frames in sections that match their fixing method. If the opening edge breaks away or concealed wiring appears, pause and define the repair before continuing. - Dismantle cabinets and storage

Remove cabinet doors and wall units before dismantling base and tall units so the remaining assembly cannot tip. Cap exposed pipes immediately, then record anchor holes, damp or mould traces, wall damage, and the clear dimensions needed for replacement orders.
Where problems usually start

- Broken plaster around the frame Levering a frame away without first cutting its junction with the wall can pull off a much larger area of plaster.
- Leak below a kitchen unit Removing a base cabinet before checking the water valve and waste connection can release water at the joint.
- Hollowed wall at anchor points Pulling a wardrobe frame and its anchors out together can tear away the wall finish around the fixing.
If water escapes, stop dismantling, close the supply valve, and check how far it has travelled through the cabinet base and floor.
After removal, measure the opening and wall again. Agree repairs to anchor holes and damaged edges before replacement doors or cabinets are released for manufacture.
Timing and records
Allow roughly four to eight hours, but the number of units, worktop cutting, reusable parts, and service connections all affect the duration. Final ordering dimensions should be confirmed only after the opening is exposed.
Keep photos of retained edges, isolated services, door-opening dimensions, damage to tile and plaster, and anchor locations. These records support both repair decisions and the final order for new joinery.
