When this work is needed
The survey matters in a full renovation and in any partial project where windows, cabinets, tile, plumbing, or electrical positions drive an order. Even an accurate completion drawing may omit later alterations or existing damage. Define what must be verified on site before releasing anything for manufacture.

- Window, wall, ceiling, and other dimensions needed for manufactured orders
- Locations of breakers, water and gas meters, access panels, pipework, and drains

What to check on site
This survey creates the baseline that separates existing conditions from construction changes. Begin where the drawing and the property disagree, then connect every measurement and defect to a clear location.
- Organize inspection criteria

Review the latest drawing and quote together, separating work to be removed, work to be retained, and access points that must remain available. If their scopes differ, decide which document governs before measurements are taken. - Measure dimensions and utility positions

Measure window openings, wall lengths, ceiling heights, and plumbing and electrical positions, marking every difference by room. For cabinets and windows that cannot be adjusted easily on site, use these measurements to confirm whether manufacture can proceed. - Record existing defects and weak points

Photograph leak marks, condensation, cracks, and impact damage with both a room view and a close-up. Link the date and position to the drawing or inspection schedule so damage exposed during demolition can be distinguished from the original condition.
Where problems usually start

- Existing leak evidence If the location and possible cause are not recorded before work, the same symptom may reappear behind the new finish.
- Structural and service constraints Ordering without locating structural walls, access panels, pipework, and wiring can expand both demolition and cost.
- Distribution-board capacity New high-load equipment can trip breakers and delay installation when the proposed load has not been checked against the available capacity.
A damp mark does not prove that waterproofing is the cause. Set additional checks that can separate plumbing, exterior-wall water, and condensation before the affected finish is specified.
If a site dimension differs from the drawing, do not leave a worker to improvise. Revise and approve the drawing and quote before manufacture or layout marking begins.
Timing and records
Allow roughly four to eight hours for inspection, but opening access panels, tracing moisture, and further service checks are additional. Leave time to issue the results before demolition or manufactured orders are released.
Keep the measured schedule, marked drawing discrepancies, photos of the distribution board and meters, and wide and close-up views of every existing defect. These records become the baseline for conditions exposed later during demolition.
The survey follows administrative approval and supplies the dimensions used for site setup and layout marking. Reading those stages together keeps ordered work and site positions on the same baseline.
