What this work covers
This finish-carpentry stage sets door frames plumb, closes their edges with casings, finishes window reveals and sills, and then adjusts leaves, hinges, handles, stops, and special-door hardware. Once expanding foam cures and the wall finish is applied, correction becomes disruptive, so the frame line and operating clearances need to be right at the fixing stage.
When this work is needed
Use it for new room or bathroom doors, hidden or pocket doors, replacement casings, window trim, sill shelves, and renewed finishes around openings. If only the door leaf is changing, first measure the retained frame for plumb, size, and hinge compatibility before including a full frame replacement.
Decide before fixing the frame
Coordinate the opening, final floor, visible trim, and real hardware dimensions.
- Door type, handing, opening width and height, and finished wall thickness
- Bottom clearance after the final flooring thickness is added
- Casing width or trimless detail, plus window casing and sill treatment
- Dimensions of hinges, handles, stops, and any pocket-door track
- Bathroom bottom seal and the waterproofing detail below the frame

Look beyond the door-set price to the opening correction, visible trim, and operating hardware.
- Are frames, leaves, casings, and window trim counted by room?
- Are opening measurement, plumb correction, shims, and foam fixing included?
- Are hinges, handles, stops, and special-door tracks identified by product?
- Are casing joints, pin marks, foam gaps, and sealant finishing included?
- Are clearance, opening, locking, and bathroom bottom-seal checks included?

What to check on site
The trim has to absorb the opening tolerance without compromising how the door or window works. Check the frame, visible edges, and hardware before foam and finishes conceal the adjustment points.
- Door Frame and Casing Fixing Complete
Measure the opening and final floor level again, then shim and fix the door frame plumb and square. Hang the leaf temporarily to check the clearances before the foam cures, and set both casing margins so they read evenly against the finished wall. - Window Casing and Finish Complete
Fit window casing and sill shelves without obstructing opening, drainage, or future inspection. Fill concealed gaps at the reveal, but investigate condensation or water staining rather than covering it behind timber trim. - Door Hardware and Special Doors Complete
Install handles, stops, pocket-door rails, entrance sliding-door parts, and the bathroom bottom seal. Operate every door repeatedly and check that it stays at a mid-open position, clears the floor, latches cleanly, and leaves access for later hardware adjustment.
Where problems usually start
- A door that moves by itself If the jambs are not plumb and the head is not level, a partly open door can swing closed or drift open without being touched.
- A bowed frame and open casing joint Too much expanding foam applied at once can push the jamb inward, change the leaf clearances, and open a gap between the casing and wall.
- A sagging door that catches Incorrect hinge recess depth or unfinished clearance adjustment lets the leaf drop onto the frame or floor during use.
- A swollen bathroom-frame bottom A broken bottom seal or missing waterproof joint allows splash water into the frame, where the core can swell and the surface can peel.
Closing the door once is not a full acceptance test. Check even margins, mid-position stability, smooth latching, floor clearance, and the wet-area bottom detail together.
Keep opening and floor measurements, frame-level readings, shim and foam photographs, hinge details, leaf clearances, operating tests, and bathroom seal records.
Timing and records
Allow about 16 to 24 hours on site. The number of openings, hidden or pocket doors, window trim, and the amount of opening correction can extend this. Allow time to retest operation after the foam has cured.
Retain the opening and floor dimensions for each room, door product and handing, frame alignment and foam fixing, hinge and hardware specification, window-trim finish, bathroom bottom seal, and final operating check.
The frame follows the partition opening and then receives the door and film or paint finish. Carry the finished-floor height and hardware dimensions through those handoffs.
