Putty and substrate preparation turns plasterboard joints, fixing marks, MDF edges, and exposed corners into a continuous surface ready for paint. Joint tape and corner beads provide the hidden strength; successive coats, sanding, and primer create the visible plane. The work disappears beneath the colour coat, but poor drying or uneven preparation shows clearly under side light.
When this work is needed
Use it before painting plasterboard, MDF, moulding, or casings, and when broad cracks or level differences in an existing painted wall need repair. A few filled pinholes for wallpaper are not the same as preparing a complete painted surface, so decide the extent from the final finish and the actual substrate rather than from a fixed number of coats.

What to check on site
Paint can reveal substrate marks rather than hide them. Follow the surface from clean protection through cured compound to a dust-free primer coat.
01Protection and Masking Complete
Clean grease and dust from the surfaces, remove switches and handles where practical, and seal the protection at floors and windows so sanding dust and primer cannot work through the gaps.
02Three Putty Coats Complete
Embed joint tape at plasterboard seams and set corner beads on exposed edges. Build from the narrow joint coat to the wider levelling coats, letting each layer dry through before feathering the next one beyond the previous edge.
03Sanding and Primer Complete
Use a movable light at a shallow angle to find ridges and hollows, sand them without cutting through the tape, and remove every trace of dust. Finish MDF cut edges and sealant-adjacent surfaces with the primer suited to their absorption and adhesion.
Where problems usually start
Blisters and peeling after paintingIf a putty coat is covered before it has dried through, trapped moisture can push the next coat or paint film away from the surface.
Corners that chip easilyA sharp exposed corner formed only with putty has little impact resistance. A properly fixed corner bead should carry the edge.
Primer and paint losing adhesionPrimer applied over sanding dust bonds to the loose dust layer rather than the substrate and can peel away with the finish coat.
Absorption lines at MDF cut edgesMDF edges absorb far more paint than the broad face. Without additional sealing, the edge remains darker or rougher through repeated coats.
Putty does not make the final colour; it makes the surface on which that colour can read evenly. Do not rush the next trade while the compound is still damp, and inspect the plane under side light first.
Keep the room-by-room finish level, tape and bead locations, drying photographs for each coat, sanding and dust-removal records, and the primer product and application count.
Timing and records
Allow about 16 to 24 hours of site work, but drying between coats can make the elapsed programme much longer. Temperature, humidity, substrate condition, and the extent of full-surface work all matter, so separate labour time from waiting time.
Retain the preparation scope, tape and corner-bead locations, MDF and sealant treatment, condition of each dried coat, side-light inspection, and primer product and photographs.
