What this work covers
Metalwork can form a slim glazed entrance door or provide handrails and guarding beside stairs, level changes, and terraces. Although the finished frame may look light, it carries repeated door movement or a person's body weight. Measured fabrication, anchors, welds, glass supports, and corrosion protection therefore need to work as one assembly.

When this work is needed
Use it for a made-to-measure metal entrance partition, a duplex stair handrail, or guarding at an open edge. These items are usually fabricated after a site measure rather than simply fitted from stock. Any change to floor or wall finish thickness can alter the frame size and fixing position.
Decide before fabrication
Set door movement and required guarding strength before choosing the frame profile and colour.
- Sliding-linked or hinged door operation, clear entrance width, stacking direction, and whether a bottom rail is recessed
- Frame section and coating, glass type and thickness, safety marking, handles, and damping hardware
- Railing height and spacing, expected leaning direction, and anchors or reinforcement suited to the wall and floor
- Any welding on site, protection from sparks and dust, weld grinding, primer, and finish-coat repair

Separate the approved fabrication drawing, structural fixing, glass support, and surface finish.
- Are site measurement, fabrication drawings, frame section, thickness, and coating specified?
- Are glass type and thickness, gaskets, setting blocks, channels, hinges, and dampers identified?
- Are railing welds, structural anchors, required reinforcement, and a load check included?
- Are spark protection, weld grinding, corrosion-resistant primer, and final touch-up included?

What to check on site
Remeasure the finished opening before fabrication, then test door movement and railing load by different methods.
- Site Dimensions and Reinforcement Confirmed

Measure the opening at several points, including diagonals and finished floor height, before releasing the frame for fabrication. Identify the structure available for railing anchors. If welding will occur on site, protect nearby glass, floors, and painted surfaces and place fire-control equipment first. - Door Frame and Glass Installed

Set the metal frame plumb and level, fix it to structure, and then install the leaves and glass. Keep glass edges away from direct metal contact with proper gaskets and setting blocks. Adjust tracks and dampers so linked panels move with even gaps. - Handrail, Painting, and Load Check Complete

Grind the handrail welds smooth and restore primer and finish paint over every exposed area. Push and pull the railing in the directions users will load it, watching anchors and welds for movement, then cycle the door repeatedly and listen for glass vibration.
Where problems usually start

- A door that binds and leaves uneven gaps Fixing a frame to a skewed opening without correcting it makes the panels run heavily and changes the perimeter gap from top to bottom.
- Rust and peeling paint around welds Paint applied over weld residue or oxidised steel without a proper primer soon lifts as corrosion spreads from the joint.
- A railing that moves under body weight Anchors that miss sound structure or weak welds can crack or release when someone leans against the railing.
- Glass rattling whenever the door moves Missing gaskets and setting blocks pass frame vibration directly into the glass edge, creating noise and increasing breakage risk.
A light-moving door and a rigid railing require different checks. Cycle the door and inspect its gaps, but load the railing in the directions a person would actually lean and watch its anchors and welds.
Keep the site dimensions, fabrication drawing, structural fixing points, weld and paint photographs, glass gaskets, final door gaps, and railing load-check record.
Timing and records
Allow about 8 to 16 hours for installation and checks. If welding or paint drying is involved, delay the final load check until the fabricator's and coating manufacturer's stated time.
Retain the frame and glass specifications, drawing, anchor and weld locations, primer and finish products, a door-operation video, and the railing load-check result.
Fabricate a metal entrance door only after the opening and floor finish are fixed. Compare it with standard entrance doors and fixed glass partitions before choosing the frame system.
