What this work covers
Ceiling carpentry suspends a level frame below the slab, builds coves, curtain pockets, and changes in height, then closes the frame with plasterboard. It also creates the hidden support for lights, air-conditioning equipment, grilles, and access panels, so the service layout and every loaded fixing point must be settled before the boards go up.

When this work is needed
Use it for a new cove or indirect-lighting detail, a system air conditioner, a curtain pocket, a ceiling level change, or a sagging ceiling that needs a new base. If only a light fitting is changing, first check whether the existing frame and local support are sound rather than rebuilding the whole ceiling.
Decide before the ceiling is closed
Set the finished height and the real service dimensions on the same reflected plan.
- Finished ceiling height in each room and the exact line of every cove or step
- Actual dimensions and positions of lights, indoor units, grilles, and access panels
- Curtain-pocket depth and support for rails, tracks, or motors
- Independent plywood support for heavy lights and air-conditioning equipment
- Number of plasterboard layers and the rule for staggering their joints
Check in the quote
Separate the ceiling area from the frame, changes in level, service openings, and load reinforcement.
- Are ceiling area, cove and step lengths, and curtain pockets measured by room?
- Are hanger and batten types, spacing, and a full level check included?
- Are reinforcement zones for indoor units, lights, rails, and access panels shown?
- Are board layers, staggered joints, and all service cutouts specified?
- Is responsibility for relocation, recutting, and renewed support clear if services move?

What to check on site
A ceiling frame must hold its own plane and the equipment passing through it. Align the services first, then confirm that the frame and board each carry only the load intended for them.

Mark the finished ceiling, coves, steps, and curtain pockets with a laser. Compare those lines with the actual sizes of lights, the indoor unit, grilles, and access panels, reject twisted timber and damaged boards, and preserve the clearance needed for later maintenance. - Hanger and Batten Frame Complete

Fix hangers and battens around existing pipes and cables at the specified spacing, then level the complete frame rather than checking one bay at a time. Add separate plywood or framed support wherever a heavy fitting, indoor unit, or curtain track will be fixed. - Gypsum Board Fixing and Cutouts Complete

Stagger plasterboard joints between layers and drive screws flush without tearing the face paper. Recheck every opening against the installed equipment, then use side light and a long level to find board steps, movement, or unsupported cut edges before putty work begins.
Where problems usually start

- Equipment fixed only to plasterboard Without independent support, the ceiling can sag and a light or air-conditioning component can pull away under its weight.
- Both board layers jointed on one line Movement concentrates through the same seam and can reappear as a crack after putty and paint.
- Frame spacing too wide A board that is not supported through its centre can bow gradually between the battens.
- Oversized or crowded light cutouts Large, closely spaced openings weaken the board and can crack or sag around the fittings.
A flat-looking board surface does not prove the hidden frame or support is adequate. Inspect and photograph spacing, level, and loaded fixing points before closure.
Keep the reflected ceiling plan, finished heights, frame material and spacing, reinforcement photographs, board layers and joints, opening dimensions, and final level check.
Timing and records
Allow about 16 to 24 hours on site. Multiple coves and steps, air-conditioning equipment, lighting openings, and reinforcement can extend this, and the frame should not start before electrical and air-conditioning first-fix positions are ready.
Retain room-by-room ceiling heights and areas, frame specification and spacing, service drawings, reinforcement photographs, board layers and joint layout, cutout dimensions, and level results.
Ceiling carpentry conceals wiring and air-conditioning pipework before the board finish, so those handoffs need to share one coordinated layout.
