Gypsum board adhesive bonds gypsum board straight to a solid wall such as concrete, brick, or block. Products mixed and placed in separate mounds on a solid wall are different from tube-applied construction adhesives used with timber framing, so identify the existing wall and how the board will be attached before choosing the product.
First decide whether the board can be bonded straight to the wall
This method can save wall depth on a dry, sound concrete, brick, or block wall when the existing surface is repaired and the exact product allows that use.

Do not cover a damp, powdery, or loose wall with adhesive. Ceilings, exterior locations, continuously wet areas, and walls requiring fire or sound performance need a separately approved method.

- The location is a ceiling, exterior wall, or continuously wet area outside the product instructions
- Fire or sound performance is expected from one board layer and adhesive without a documented complete wall

Inspect the wall before comparing products
How well the board holds depends as much on the existing wall, product type, amount applied, and order of the work as it does on the name on the bag or tube.
- What is the existing wall made of?
- Identify concrete, cement brick, block, or a previously painted surface. Remove loose coating, dust, oil, and weak material, and repair excessive moisture before any adhesive is applied.
- How will the board be bonded to the wall?
- A gypsum-based product mixed and placed in separate mounds on a solid wall is different from a tube adhesive used along timber framing. Follow the exact wall type and any required screws or nails in that product's instructions.
- How much adhesive goes behind each board?
- Match the size and spacing of each adhesive mound, or the lines of tube adhesive, to the board height and weight. Using too little can leave too little adhesive touching the wall and too little room to adjust the board evenly.
- When can finishing begin?
- Use mixed material within the time stated in the instructions, keep the board vertical while it sets, and preserve the gaps at the top and bottom. Fill joints and start the finish only after the selected product has hardened for the required time.

List each part of the board-bonding work
A single board-and-adhesive line can omit wall repairs, surface preparation, adjustment time, how the board will be held while the adhesive sets, and the wait before finishing.
- Record the wall material, strength and moisture condition, plus removal of loose paint, dust, oil, and weak areas.
- Name the adhesive manufacturer and product, board size, mixing method, placement pattern, and expected quantity.
- Agree on top and bottom gaps, how the board will be adjusted until it is vertical and even, and how it will be held while the adhesive sets.
- Set the start time for joint filling and finishing, and review any fire or sound requirement in documents for the complete wall design.

A loose board needs more than a surface repair
If the finished wall bows, cracks, or sounds different when tapped, investigate the existing wall and adhesive pattern before patching the finish.
- Trace loose areas and cracks back to leaks, condensation, wall dust, adhesive placement, and movement before the adhesive hardened.
- When opening the wall for new pipes or cables, locate the bonded areas and restore the board with a method suited to the current wall.
- For later repairs, recheck the current instructions for the wall and board instead of selecting a product only because it matches the old adhesive name.
