Current OSHA and NIOSH guidance documents a broad range of crystalline-silica content among engineered-stone products. A statement that one named line contains more than 90% natural quartz is not proof that every engineered-stone slab has the same composition.

What To Fix In The Quote And Shop Drawing
Record the manufacturer, series, color code, production lot, finish, slab size, and actual material thickness. Show any built-up edge, exposed edge profile, backsplash, slab orientation, seam locations, and vein-matching plan. A small chip is only a starting point; review a large sample or the actual slabs under the project's light before fabrication.
Sink and cooktop openings concentrate stress. The shop drawing should identify cutout dimensions, inside-corner radii, sink attachment, faucet and dispenser holes, support rails, cabinet level, and overhang support. Confirm the delivery route because lifts, stairs, doors, and turns can force an extra seam. Read the warranty for its treatment of seams, chips, cracks, thermal damage, normal wear, re-fabrication, support, and installation errors.
Silica Dust And Local Rules
Separate normal use of a finished countertop from work that processes the slab. Cutting, grinding, drilling, edging, polishing, repair, and removal of silica-containing material can generate respirable crystalline-silica dust. Complete dimensions and openings in the fabrication shop where possible, do not accept uncontrolled dry processing on site, and confirm that a qualified fabricator uses wet methods, local exhaust ventilation, exposure assessment, housekeeping, training, and protective measures required by the applicable rules.
Safe Work Australia says Australian jurisdictions prohibited the manufacture, supply, processing, and installation of engineered-stone benchtops, panels, and slabs covered by its definition from 1 July 2024, followed by an import prohibition from 1 January 2025. This is an Australian rule, not a statement of Korean, Japanese, U.S., or worldwide law. The same agency says available evidence suggests an installed product does not pose a safety risk during normal use. Repair, modification, removal, or disposal can create dust and should be handled by qualified tradespeople. Check current rules where the project is located.
Use And Care
Routine care usually starts with warm water, a soft cloth, mild soap, and prompt spill cleanup. A product that is non-porous or does not need sealing is not maintenance-free. Matte, brushed, textured, dark, or monotone finishes can show fingerprints, water marks, metal marks, or everyday patina more readily than another finish.
Keep hot pots, pans, electric skillets, slow cookers, air fryers, and toaster ovens off the surface with a solid trivet or ventilated hot pad. Use a cutting board. Protect exposed edges and the areas around sinks and dishwashers from impact by heavy cookware. Do not use oven or drain cleaner, strong acids or alkalis, acetone or strong solvents, or abrasive products unless the current care guide allows them. Do not cut or grind the installed top yourself when repair or removal is needed.
