An engineered stone or quartz countertop is a factory-made slab that combines quartz or other mineral material with resin, pigments, and additives. It is considered for a hard, stone-like surface, controlled colors and patterns, and the easy care of many non-porous product lines, but the exact composition, crystalline-silica content, thickness, finish, seams, cutouts, support, heat and impact care, and the fabricator's dust controls must be checked product by product.

A solid surface / acrylic countertop is a non-porous, homogeneous resin-mineral sheet material considered for kitchens, vanities, and counters when a visually integrated surface, inconspicuous seams, integrated sinks, and future repairability matter. The Korean quote term `artificial marble` can also be used for engineered stone, ceramic, or natural-stone substitutes, so the product family, thickness, color and finish, seam plan, sink detail, and heat and scratch care rules should be confirmed before choosing it.

Identify The Product Family First
Ceramic countertop is not one technical specification. A quote may use the term for a porcelain stoneware slab, a large-format ceramic panel, a sintered stone, or an ultracompact surface. LOTTE Chemical describes Locelain as a porcelain ceramic panel, Laminam identifies its slabs as porcelain stoneware, and Neolith identifies its product as sintered stone.
Record the manufacturer, series, and color code together with the body material, any resin, bonded backing or mesh, crystalline-silica content, actual thickness, and finish. Terms such as natural minerals, resin-free, silica-free, full-body, and 100% ceramic do not prove the same thing. Check that the current TDS, SDS, test reports, and warranty all name the product being quoted.
What Changes In The Room And In Use
Large slabs can create a broad work surface with fewer joints than standard tile. Product lines include quiet solids, concrete and metal effects, and large stone-like veining. They are considered for kitchens, islands, vanities, laundry counters, and service counters where a hard, slim-looking surface matters. Review a large sample or the actual slab because scale, color, gloss, texture, and pattern can read differently from a small chip.
Low absorption and resistance to stains, heat, scratches, chemicals, or UV are product claims with test and finish boundaries. Thickness and polished, matte, soft, or textured finishes can change care requirements. Compare this family with solid surface when deciding between a hard slab and priorities such as curved fabrication, inconspicuous seams, or sanding-based repair. Compare it with engineered stone by checking resin, heat guidance, edge and cutout design, fabrication method, and silica documentation.
Fix The Quote And Fabrication Drawing
Show slab size and usable cut size, actual thickness, production lot, finish, pattern direction, seams, vein layout, exposed edge, and any mitered build-up. Separate the ceramic body's thickness from a built-up visual edge. Do not assume invisible seams or automatic vein continuity.
Sink and hob openings, faucet holes, and inside corners concentrate stress. The product manual should govern edge distances, corner radii, appliance clearances, sink attachment and support, cabinet level, reinforcement around openings, and overhang support. Do not copy a numeric limit from one manufacturer into another system.
Large rigid pieces also need a delivery plan. Review lifts, stairs, doors, turns, storage, vertical handling, lifting equipment, and installation sequence with the fabricator. Site access may add a seam. Openings should not become lifting points, and edges and corners need protection from twist and impact.
Separate Fabrication From Installed Use
Normal use of a finished countertop is different from processing the slab. Cutting, drilling, grinding, trimming, or polishing a porcelain or sintered product that contains crystalline silica can generate respirable crystalline silica. Check the SDS, complete as much work as possible in the shop, avoid uncontrolled dry processing, and confirm applicable wet suppression, on-tool extraction or local exhaust ventilation, cleanup, exposure controls, training, and PPE.
Australia excludes porcelain products and sintered stone from its engineered-stone definition only when they do not contain resin. Safe Work Australia still requires controlled processing where crystalline silica is present. This is an Australian jurisdiction boundary, not proof that a product is resin-free or silica-free and not a statement of Korean or worldwide law.
Daily Use And Care
Start routine care with water, a microfibre cloth, and neutral detergent, then rinse and dry the surface. Clean spills before they harden and follow the separate instructions for polished, soft, or textured finishes. Do not use hydrofluoric-acid products, metal pads, or abrasive particles without explicit product guidance.
Use a cutting board to protect both knives and the finish, and do not drag ceramic knives or similarly hard objects across the surface. Some products permit common hot cookware, but thickness, finish, installation, and warranty conditions differ. Use a trivet under hot cookware and heat-generating appliances unless the exact current guide clearly says otherwise. Protect corners, bevels, and sink or hob edges from heavy impact. Have chips, cracks, modification, or removal handled by a fabricator who understands the product and its dust controls.
