Bathroom waterproofing begins after the plumbing positions and substrate are ready. The work connects the floor, wet-area walls, corners, drain, and pipe penetrations into one continuous waterproofing system, then finishes with inspection, testing, and protection before tile covers the surface.
When this work is needed
If the bathroom has been stripped out or the drain and pipe penetrations have moved, the original waterproof layer may no longer be continuous, so the new waterproofing scope needs to be defined first. If only the visible finish is changing and the existing layer will remain untouched, do not assume that the whole room must be waterproofed again. Check the demolition scope, leak history, and whether the current system can be retained.
Decide before work starts
A product name alone is not enough. Agree on these four points before signing the contract.
How far the waterproofing will extend across the floor, walls, and shower area
Which waterproofing system and compatible product range will be used
How the drain, corners, threshold, and pipe penetrations will be reinforced
Which test will be completed before tiling and who will confirm that it passed

Who checks and repairs the membrane if it is damaged during tile work?
What to check on site
This is not simply a matter of coating the floor. The floor, walls, drain, corners, and pipe penetrations must work as one continuous waterproof layer. Make sure each layer has dried before the next stage begins.
01Base Cleanup and Primer Complete
Remove dust and weak mortar, then repair cracks and gaps around the pipework. Before anything is covered, check that the drain flange and wall-to-floor corners are visible, the primer has soaked in evenly, and no wet substrate has been sealed underneath.
02Cementitious Waterproofing and Joint Treatment Complete
Stabilize the substrate with the first cementitious layer, then run joint tape and reinforcement continuously around corners and penetrations. Check that the waterproofing connects into the drain fitting rather than stopping beside it, and allow the layer to cure for the time specified by the manufacturer.
03Two Liquid-Membrane Coats Complete
Apply the second liquid-membrane coat only after the first has dried, changing the application direction to build an even thickness. Under bright light, look for pinholes, bubbles, bare patches, thin areas, and material collecting heavily around corners or the drain.
04Flood Test Passed and Protection Complete
Seal the drain and fill the floor to the agreed water level. Monitor the level and the ceiling below for the required test period. After draining, check again for lifting or damage, then protect the approved surface from foot traffic and drilling during tile installation.
Where problems usually start
Drain connectionCheck that the membrane is sealed continuously into the drain fitting with no open edge or gap.
Wall-to-floor junctionCheck that the reinforcement and membrane continue through the change of plane without a break.
Waterproofed floorLook for pinholes, bubbles, lifting, or areas that are visibly thinner than the rest.
Threshold and doorwayCheck the termination height and coverage so water cannot pass into the adjoining room.
Approved tapes, collars, and junction details vary by manufacturer. The quote should name the actual components and treatment area instead of leaving reinforcement as an unspecified site decision.
A suspicious mark during the flood test does not automatically prove that the membrane has failed. Plumbing, the drain connection, and the temporary test seal are also possible causes. Stop the tile work and have the waterproofing and plumbing teams isolate the source together.
Timing and records
Avoid reducing the programme to a promise such as ‘waterproofing takes one day.’ Separate active work from drying between coats, final curing, inspection, and testing. The repair needed to the substrate, the chosen system, temperature and humidity, and any failed test can all change the handover date.
Keep the product and batch details, photos of the full coverage and close-ups of every junction, inspection and test records, repair and retest records, and the warranty documents. Once tile covers the membrane, these records become the clearest evidence of what was installed.
