Silicone finishing closes the flexible junctions after the grout has cured. Inside corners, wall-to-floor changes, and joints between tile and sanitary fixtures are sealed with an elastic silicone. Before the tile work is signed off, the installer also checks for hollow tiles, movement, efflorescence, and surface contamination that sealant cannot correct.
When this work is needed
New tile work in a bathroom, kitchen, or entry needs flexible sealant wherever the materials or planes can move independently. Existing silicone that has split or pulled away at these junctions also needs renewal. Small stains in rigid field joints should not simply be covered with silicone, so separate the flexible joints from the areas that should remain grouted before work starts.

What to check on site
Silicone should form an elastic joint where movement and water need to be accommodated. It is not a cover for every gap. Expose clean bonding faces, control the joint depth, and allow the completed bead to cure without movement.
01Silicone Areas and Surfaces Prepared
Remove grout and old silicone from wall-to-floor corners and around fixtures until both bonding faces are exposed. Dry the surfaces completely, install backing material where the gap is deep, and mask the intended width so the silicone does not become excessively thin on one side.
02Inside-Corner Silicone Caulking Complete
Inject sanitary-grade silicone continuously around corners and fixtures, then tool it so the bead contacts both sides of the joint. Avoid a concave channel that holds water and a feather-thin edge that lifts easily, and remove the masking before a surface skin forms.
03Final Tap-Test and Efflorescence Inspection Complete
Inspect separately for hollow tiles, movement, efflorescence, and contamination because silicone cannot repair these defects. Keep water and fixture movement away until the product is fully cured, then press the finished bead gently to find cracks, open edges, or incomplete adhesion.
Where problems usually start
Silicone at inside cornersFilling a moving corner with rigid grout can lead to cracking as the adjoining surfaces expand and contract.
Loose tile concealed before sealingSkipping the tapping inspection can leave a hollow or unstable tile to detach after occupancy.
Floor tile moved during curingWalking on the floor before it has cured can set a tile out of position and disturb the finished joint lines.
Efflorescence and surface contaminationIf deposits are left when the finish is closed, they may remain as stubborn stains that are harder to remove later.
If a silicone joint has split, do not apply a new bead over the surface. Check adhesion of the existing material, movement at the junction, and any water path before deciding how much must be removed and replaced.
If tapping finds hollow tile or the tile moves, do not seal the perimeter and call the work complete. Inspect the adhesive and substrate, repair the tile, and only then close the flexible joints.
Timing and records
Allow roughly two to four hours for active work, but grout curing, drying of the joint, and silicone curing are additional. Keep traffic and water away for at least 24 hours unless the product specification and site temperature or humidity require a different period.
Record the silicone product and colour, every application location, tapping results and any efflorescence or contamination before work, and the completed corner and fixture joints. If cracking or tile movement appears later, these records help separate the original condition from the repair responsibility.
