Entry and general floor tiling begins with the substrate, threshold, doors, and adjoining finishes. Their finished heights establish the tile level and layout. Large tiles are then fully bedded with an adhesive suited to the base, and the completed floor is checked for flatness, hollow spots, and trip edges before grouting.
When this work is needed
A new tiled entry, balcony, or interior floor needs its own level and layout wherever it meets timber, vinyl, a threshold, or a door. If only one or two tiles are damaged, do not assume the whole floor needs to be removed. First check whether matching tiles are available and map how far any hollow sound, movement, cracking, or lippage extends.
Decide before work starts
The tile itself is only one part of the decision. Agree on these installation references before work begins.
The tiled area, tile size and batch, pattern direction, and required quantity
Finished levels at the entry threshold, below doors, and beside adjoining flooring
The starting point, grout reference lines, and where cut tiles will fall at the edges
The adhesive and bedding method suited to the substrate and any insulation layer
Acceptance criteria for tapping, flatness, alignment, and trip edges before grouting

Does the price include checking moisture and flatness and completing the necessary substrate repairs?
Are the tile size, quantity, wastage, and threshold profile specified?
Are the adhesive and bedding method appropriate for the actual substrate?
Who checks the levels below doors and beside adjoining flooring, and when?
If tapping or level checks find a problem, are repairs and reinspection included?
What to check on site
The finish succeeds or fails at two places: where it meets the surrounding floors and below the broad face of each large tile. Set the level and layout first, then check adhesive coverage while the work is still open.
01Reference Lines and Level Checked
Compare the thickness of the threshold, timber, vinyl, and any other adjoining finish, then set the top level of the tile. Dry-plan the layout so the doorway and cabinet fronts are not left with awkward narrow cuts and the grout lines follow a deliberate reference.
02Large Floor Tile Bonding Complete
Comb adhesive in the same direction across the substrate and the back of each large tile, then use vibration and pressure to collapse the ridges. Lift an occasional tile to confirm full contact, and keep checking the reference line, joint width, and corner lippage as the floor progresses.
03Level and Tap-Test Inspection Complete
After curing, tap every tile for hollow areas and movement, and use a long straightedge to check the broad floor for high and low spots. Confirm that the threshold and adjoining finishes do not create a trip edge and that the grout lines sit square to the doors and walls.
Where problems usually start
Voids below large tilesIncomplete adhesive coverage concentrates foot traffic loads and can lead to cracking or detachment.
Adhesion over insulationAn adhesive system that does not suit the insulated substrate can allow the tile layer to lift and move.
Threshold and floor junctionA profile set at the wrong height creates an uncomfortable step and a potential trip point.
Adhesive coverage across the tileToo little adhesive or a small contact area may look sound initially but loosen as the floor is used.
A hollow sound does not mean the entire tiled floor must be removed. Mark the affected area and check movement, cracks, and actual adhesive condition before setting the repair scope.
If a threshold catches the foot or a tile moves, pause the grout and adjoining floor finish. The tiling contractor should reset the height reference and agree on the repair before the junction is closed.
Timing and records
Allow roughly four to eight hours for active tiling, but substrate repair and drying, adhesive curing, inspection, and repairs are additional. Keep traffic off the floor for at least 24 hours before grouting unless the adhesive specification or site temperature and humidity require longer.
Record the tile product and batch, substrate condition, threshold and adjoining floor levels, reference lines and layout, adhesive used, tapping and flatness results, and every repaired area. Once grout and the adjoining finish are installed, the condition below the tile is much harder to verify.
