Layout marking transfers the latest approved drawing onto the actual floors and walls. It gives partitions, doors, plumbing, electrical work, tile, and cabinets one shared level, plumb, and square coordinate system before the positions are built in.

When this work is needed
Mark the layout after demolition and measurement whenever a partition, door, cabinet, tile grid, light, outlet, tap, or drain changes position. A small repair that retains every location may need only limited checks, but first confirm that the drawing still matches the property and that no new position must coordinate with another trade.
Decide before work starts
Approve the reference system and finished dimensions before any line is fixed on site.

- Are laser references and layout marking included as a distinct stage?

What to check on site
Layout marking creates one coordinate system for several trades. A wrong first reference shifts walls, services, cabinets, and finishes together, so inspect the baseline before marking and the coordination after it.
- Confirm reference points

Reconcile the drawing with the measured dimensions, then establish the floor level and baseline wall from a durable reference point. Extend level and plumb lines between rooms with a laser and check diagonals for square so every trade can work from the same geometry. - Mark main positions

Mark partitions, doors, lights, outlets, taps, and drain centres on the actual site. Account for plasterboard, tile, countertops, and other finish thicknesses and mark the finished face; otherwise the visible position shifts when those layers are installed. - Review positions by trade

Have the electrical, plumbing, and carpentry contractors stand at the same marks and check clashes together. When a position changes, update both the site line and the drawing and photo record so the next worker does not follow an obsolete mark.
Where problems usually start

- The first reference line An inaccurate first level or plumb line can shift tile joints, doors, and partitions together.
- Electrical and plumbing positions Missing outlet, tap, and drain centres can force finished surfaces to be cut open and chased again.
- Finished partition line Ignoring finish thickness, clear door width, or cabinet dimensions can make a completed partition unusable and require rebuilding.
When a site mark differs from the drawing, do not let a worker move it to the nearest convenient point. Check usability and clashes, then approve the change with the revised drawing.
If a reference disappears during construction or floor repair, do not estimate from an old photograph. Extend it again from the original control point with the laser and remark the site.
Timing and records
Allow about half a day, but the number of rooms and coordinated electrical, plumbing, and cabinet positions can change this. Allow time for the relevant contractors to inspect together, and do not start affected work before changes are approved.
Photograph the control points, full chalk lines, finished partition, door, and cabinet faces, and the light, outlet, tap, and drain positions from the same orientation as the drawing. Issue the latest drawing and those photographs together to every affected trade.
