Baseboards close the junction between the wall and finished floor with MDF, PVC, or solid timber. They cover the cut edge and expansion gap while protecting the lower wall from cleaning and everyday knocks. Because the line runs around the whole room, uneven walls, inaccurate corners, and poorly planned endpoints remain noticeable even when the trim itself is small.
When this work is needed
Use baseboards to conceal the perimeter of timber, vinyl, or similar flooring and protect the bottom of the wall. A trimless detail is also possible, but omitting the board does not remove the joint: the lower wall, flooring cut line, and expansion clearance then need a more exact alternative finish.
Decide with the floor finish
Choose a baseboard that resolves the floor movement, wall condition, and adjoining joinery.
MDF, PVC, or solid timber, with the required height and thickness
Colour and surface finish in relation to the wall, casing, and floor
Mitred internal and external corners and the treatment of exposed ends
Floor expansion clearance and where a bottom sealant line is actually needed
Endpoints at door frames, built-in cabinets, and kitchen plinths
Check in the quote
Do not check length alone. Corners, lower-wall preparation, and the final joint treatment make up much of the result.
Are room-by-room lengths, material, size, and colour stated?
Is removal of dust, mortar projections, and severe lower-wall waviness included?
Are corner measurement, mitre cutting, and endpoints at frames and cabinets included?
Are adhesive fixing, tacker fixing, and temporary pressure on curved sections specified?
Are pin-hole filling and any required joint or bottom sealant included?
What to check on site
The baseboard should cover the flooring clearance without locking the floor in place. Prepare the lower wall first, then keep the long visible line calm through every corner and endpoint.
01Material and Lower Wall Prep Complete
Confirm the height, thickness, and colour against the installed floor. Remove dust and mortar projections from the lower wall, and make sure the flooring expansion gap will be covered rather than filled solid with adhesive or sealant.
02Cutting and Attachment Complete
Measure each wall and the actual corner angles before cutting. Put long-run joints where they are least visible, correct severe wall projections instead of forcing the trim across them, and hold each section straight until the adhesive sets.
03Pin Marks and Joint Finish Complete
Fill pin marks and small joint steps without rounding the profile. Look along the finished line from a distance, then check every corner and endpoint at door casings or fitted furniture for gaps, lifting, and an inconsistent bottom joint.
Where problems usually start
Open mitres at cornersA fixed 45-degree cut rarely matches every site corner. If the real angle is not measured, the two pieces can leave a gap that sealant cannot disguise neatly.
Baseboard lifting from the wallDust, mortar projections, or insufficient pressure weaken the bond and can let the board move as the flooring expands and contracts.
Pin marks visible after paintingTacker holes left at the carpentry stage repeat as small dark pits once paint or film has been completed.
Water entering the floor jointIn wet-cleaning areas, breaks in the required bottom seal can let water reach the baseboard and flooring edge, causing swelling or lifting.
A thick bead of sealant should not be used to rescue poor cutting or an unprepared wall. Fit and press the trim first, then seal only the joints that need it.
Keep room lengths, material specification, measured corner angles, lower-wall repairs, endpoints, fixing photographs, and the final corner and bottom-joint inspection.
Timing and records
Allow about 4 to 8 hours on site. More rooms, corners, wall waviness, and junctions with frames or furniture increase the time. Protect fresh adhesive and sealant from impact and wet cleaning while they cure.
Retain the material, height, colour, room-by-room length, corner measurements, lower-wall corrections, endpoints, attachment method, and finished-joint photographs.
