What this work covers
Bathroom faucet installation connects the basin tap and shower mixer to the water supplies, then completes the basin waste trap and shower rail. Products that look interchangeable may use different centres, threads, and required projection from the wall. A small alignment or sealing error can leave a slow leak behind a finished surface.
When this work is needed
This work follows installation of the basin and other sanitary fixtures, or can be used when existing taps are replaced. Before buying a replacement, compare the hot and cold positions, wall centres, thread sizes, isolation valves, and waste arrangement with the actual bathroom.
Decide before installation
Choose a fitting around the pipework and comfortable use before choosing its finish.
- Spout reach and height so water lands inside the basin rather than on its rim
- Shower mixer centres, wall-connection depth, and diverter arrangement
- Hand shower or overhead shower functions and a rail height everyone can reach
- Waste-centre position, trap type, and enough access below the basin for cleaning

- Are basin and shower faucets, flexible hoses, wall connectors, and the waste trap included?
- How will replacement of corroded isolation valves or damaged threads be priced?

What to check on site
Match the fittings with the water isolated, then test at both low and full flow.
- Pipe and Faucet Specifications Confirmed
Close the isolation valves and confirm the hot and cold positions, shower-pipe centres, and exposed thread length. Check that flexible hoses can reach without tension or kinks and that the basin waste aligns with the trap. - Faucets and Shower Fittings Installed
Assemble the basin faucet, pop-up waste, and trap in order. Set both wall connections to the same depth so the shower mixer sits level, then fix the shower rail vertically where it can be reached without drilling into concealed pipework. - Water Flow and Hot/Cold Direction Checked
Open the valves slowly, verify hot and cold operation and every diverter, then run the maximum flow. Wipe threads, hose nuts, and trap joints with dry tissue to reveal small droplets, and move the shower handset repeatedly to check the rail and holder.
Where problems usually start
- Droplets forming at a threaded joint Poorly sealed wall connectors can stay dry during a quick test, then slowly release water behind the trim and tile.
- Drain odour entering through the basin A misaligned trap or a trap without a reliable water seal lets sewer air return through the basin waste.
- A shower holder pulling to one side A rail that is not vertical or is fixed weakly can loosen under the repeated offset weight of the handset.
- A shower mixer sitting out of level Unequal wall-connector projection leaves the mixer tilted and creates uneven gaps behind its cover plates.
- A cracked flexible-hose nut Overtightening can split the nut or distort its washer, causing leakage only after the supply is pressurised.
A brief flow test can miss a slow leak. Run the fixtures fully, dry every joint, and inspect below the basin again after the first day and a few days of use.
Keep the faucet models and installation drawings, measured pipe centres and projection, trap layout, drilling photographs, and close views of every joint during testing.
Timing and records
Allow about 2 to 4 hours. Corroded valves, damaged threads, or wall connections at the wrong depth can extend the work.
Retain the faucet and trap models, hot and cold arrangement, connection parts, and photographs of the water-flow test and shower-rail fixing.
